How to choose an AI agency in Montreal: the right questions to ask
Before you hand your first AI project to an agency, here are the concrete criteria that separate a serious partner from a polished deck.
AI is getting a lot of attention. And with it, a new wave of agencies claiming to specialize in “AI-powered digital transformation.” Before you sign with anyone, here is how to separate a serious partner from a polished slide deck.
1. Do they start with the problem or the technology?
The first sign of a good partner: they ask more questions than they demo things. A serious consultant wants to understand what is slowing you down, where your team is losing time, and what you are actually trying to accomplish — before they ever mention a tool or a platform.
If the first meeting feels like a product pitch, that is a warning sign.
2. Do they propose concrete deliverables?
“AI strategy,” “transformation roadmap” and “change management” — these terms can hide a simple reality: a lot of consulting, not much delivery.
Ask directly: What will you actually deliver, and in how long? A good partner can answer that with precision.
3. Is pricing fixed or open-ended?
Open-scope projects tend to run over. Ask for a fixed price upfront, or at minimum a clear budget range with defined milestones.
If the answer is “it depends on hours” with no ceiling and no checkpoints, be careful.
4. Do they have experience with small businesses?
There is a real difference between working with large enterprises and working with SMBs. Small businesses have different constraints: limited budgets, small teams, no IT department, fast decision cycles.
An agency used to enterprise clients will often overbuild — months of deployment for something that could be delivered in two weeks.
5. Can they show you real results?
Not generic case studies. Specific outcomes: X hours saved per week, Y% reduction in errors, Z leads captured automatically. If the examples stay vague, ask yourself why.
6. Do they understand the Montreal market?
Montreal is a bilingual market with its own dynamics: French and English clientele, the realities of local SMBs, specific sectors (construction, real estate, professional services, hospitality). A local partner understands those nuances without having to be briefed on them.
The right AI agency does not look like a consulting firm. It looks like a partner who starts small, delivers fast, and grows the solution with you.
